On-Site Testing of GoGo Instruments' Corona Poling Device

Corona poling occurs when an irregular conductor creates a highly non-uniform electric field. When the voltage increases to a certain value near an electrode with a small radius of curvature within this non-uniform electric field, discharge happens due to air ionization, forming a corona. Because the electric field is very weak in the outer region of the corona, no collision ionization occurs there. The charged particles in the outer corona are essentially ions, and these ions form the corona discharge current. Simply put, a discharge from a conductor electrode with a small radius of curvature into the air produces the corona.

Principle: The ions generated by the corona move through the electric field, recombine on the surface of the thin film accompanied by chemical changes, while a large number of ions penetrate through the film surface into its interior. When these ions are captured by various "deep traps" (defects in the crystal lattice that can capture particles) within the dielectric, a certain space charge layer is formed at a certain depth below the sample surface. Due to electrostatic interaction, a negative space charge layer is induced on the bottom surface, thus forming a homo-charge electret.
